Cal Lutheran Cares Day 2025

In the 1980s Cal Lutheran supported an Elderhostel program dedicated to lifelong learning for individuals in retirement. Though that program faded, a few decades later we came full circle, introducing Fifty and Better (FAB) in 2020.

Since that time, FAB has served our local and national community members aged 50 and older by offering stimulating courses, lectures, museum and gallery tours, summer CLU Kingsmen Shakespeare plays, Tai Chi and Chair Yoga classes, and more!

Some of our accomplishments in our first five years:

• First in the area to pivot to virtual courses and lectures
• First in the area to begin offering HyFlex courses (students choose to attend in-person or virtually)
• Served over 1780 students (and counting)
• Hosted over 105 courses with more than 7500 enrollments
• Presented over 200 lectures with more than 17,600 enrollments
• Presented free lectures and tours (in-person and virtually) to include and educate all
• Hosted a number of museum and gallery tours, Tai Chi and Qigong classes, Chair Yoga classes, campus and SEEd garden tours, virtual jeopardy games, and more

FAB’s future begins today! There is so much more we want to do in FAB’s next 5 years, and we cannot do it without your help. We are striving to:

• Increase our offerings and present more lectures and course in the HyFlex modality (doing this well increases our costs) 
• Offer more in-person and virtual social engagement activities, including daytrips (with transportation)
• Continue to provide snacks and water at lectures and courses
• Host social gatherings
• Give scholarships to those who are not able to afford our courses and activities.
• Hire an administrative assistant so our students (and faculty) continue to receive exceptional care and service.

• Hire own FAB part-time faculty
